Floating Solar Panels at Gili Lankanfushi

Gili Lankanfushi resort has become the first resort in the Maldives to install floating solar panels. This is a big step towards the resort’s sustainable environment policy, because the floating solar panel will help to reduce annual carbon footprint by 35 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

In a press release Gili Lankanfushi stated that the floating solar panel is a “an engineering marvel, an innovative floating structure that is designed to survive waves and water turbulence, It consists of glass fibre tubes, aluminium frames and 112 solar panels. Weighing over five tonnes, it took nearly one third of Gili Lankanfushi’s hosts to push it into the water.”

The solar platform was installed at Gili Lankanfushi by an Australian company called Swimsol, which specializes in providing solar power solutions. It is expected that on sunny days the floating solar panel can produce around 200 kWh of power.

Deborah Burn, marine biologist and environmental officer at the resort said “It’s a great step towards becoming an eco-friendly resort, and it’s good for our marketing as well.”

Gili Lankanfushi is among the best resorts of the world. Evidence of this is the resort winning the prestigious TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Award 2015 for Best Hotel in the World.”

  1. Floating Solar Power Systems are wonderful Ideas. And it’s very important to maintain effectively same direction and position on the water for floating solar plants. Because directional change of solar panels reduces electricity production. So floating solar plants also need the directional control mooring systems for their parked positions. Azimuth and position change of floating solar plants caused by wind, waves and external forces. Restoring Force Strengthened Mooring System for floating solar plants has been created in South Korea. This Mooring System generates Restoring Force immediately when floating solar plants are being rotated or moved on the water.

In addition, you have to reduce vibration to install floating solar plants. Because, it can make micro-cracks to floating solar panels and the durability problem of floating solar plants. The risk of power loss in PV modules due to micro cracks is increasing.

Vibrations caused by wind, waves and external forces. New Type Floating Body Stabilizer has been created in South Korea. The Floating Body Stabilizers generate drag force immediately when floating solar plants are being rolled, pitched and yawed on the water. Recently, Restoring Force Strengthened Mooring Systems and Floating Body Stabilizers have been used for floating solar plants in South Korea. You can see them in Ochang Dam, South Korea. I N I WORLD
